I came up with my idea for the final project in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep. As I mentioned in my previous post I had a lot of struggles coming up with an idea and when I realized what I wanted my final project to be about I was surprised I didn’t think about it earlier. I have decided that it will be about art.
A little background: 1 year ago my interest for art really sparked. I have an very artistic family and have always been surrounded by creative people. Many on my moms side paints, but I have never really been good at it. I have always enjoyed doing it but the final results has never been really good, in my opinion. In my family we have also traveled a lot and when we have done this we have always gone to different types of museums. Growing up like this has made me get a sense of art and culture. I have always had an interest for museums, art galleries and more well-known art pieces such as the Mona Lisa. But I hasn’t perhaps been one of my main interests in life. Though I have always been extremely fascinated of how creative some people are and how well some can paint and create.
But it wasn’t until about a year ago my interest for art and more art history really started to grow. I would say it was an specific piece of art that really sparked my interest. The piece is made from the Swedish painter Sigrid Hjerten and it’s called ”Den Röda Rullgardinen”, which means ”The Red Blind”. The first time I saw it was at the Modern Museum of Art in Stockholm. I remember thinking ”This is my type of art!”.

Why I liked the painting so much? It was very colorful, had a very warmed-toned color-scheme but she also mixed it with cool-toned colors, which I liked. The painting includes a quite stripped down woman, which I also liked because for me it symbolized feminism (don’t ask me why.. someone could say it could symbolize the opposite).
I got a book about her and even the book cover was pretty and it made me very inspired. Two things that I then realized when getting the book that made me even more fond of her. 1. She was married to the famous artist Isaac Grünewald, and the funny thing is that I’m kind of “related” to him, somehow, very far away… So I have always known how he is and known of his paintings. 2. She actually moved to France to study art. Her teacher there was Henri Matisse, which is also an artist I have always known of. Because I have always liked his paintings.
After this experience I started doing more research about art and going to more museums and art galleries around Stockholm. I learnt more about well-known painters, did a lot of research and discovered my favorite art pieces. I got books about modern art and I think I visited The Modern Museum of Art in Stockholm 5 times within the time of 6 months. When we went to Nice in France this summer I knew I had to go to Henri Matisse’s summerhouse. I got to see one of his most famous and one of my favorite pieces, which is ”Nu Blue”.

Other than that the museum was, to be honest, an disappointment because I thought it would include more of his paintings. But I guess his most famous ones are at places like MOMA and Guggenheim in New York, and TATE Modern in London. These museums are my on top of my to do list right now!

Anyways, I have grown an huge passion for art and especially modern art. Therefore it feels like an obvious choice for me to base my final project around art. My idea is to create a ”art gallery”. I will explain my idea more in-depth in my next post.
