Project about art and artists

As my final project I have decided to create a ”art gallery”. I will include ten different artists. I have carefully chosen a mixture of different artist from different times. I wanted it to be a mix of ”classical” art, pop culture art but most of them have created art that goes by the name ”modern art”, because this is my favorite type of art. Five of these artists are well-known and I would say most people knows about them. I will also include 5 artist that are less well-known but in my opinion worth mentioning since I find them talented and interesting. I will create a blogpost of each artists. In these blogposts I will include three pieces of their most famous/iconic art that I think symbolizes them well. It will also include a brief biography and facts that I think are relevant and interesting about the artist. Then I will make  a collages that represents the artist so the reader gets a better insight of the the artists life and art. I will end it off with why I choose the artist and what I like/dislike.

I had a hard time choosing which artist to have in my ”art gallery”. I decided to include: Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Vincent Van Gogh, Isaac Grünewald, Sigrid Hjerten, Jesper Waldersten, Josef Frank & Hilma Af Klint.

I would have wanted to include artist such as Michelangelo, Marcel Duchamp, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Claude Monet, Marc Chagall & Leonardo Da Vinci but I wanted to stick to a number of ten artists.

This project is my approach to creativity and the goal is for me to get better knowledge of each artists. My creativity will be shown in the collages because that’s my interoperation of each artist. I also want the reader to get a better overview and knowledge of the artists.

Background to my idea on the final project

I came up with my idea for the final project in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep. As I mentioned in my previous post I had a lot of struggles coming up with an idea and when I realized what I wanted my final project to be about I was surprised I didn’t think about it earlier. I have decided that it will be about art.

A little background: 1 year ago my interest for art really sparked. I have an very artistic family and have always been surrounded by creative people. Many on my moms side paints, but I have never really been good at it. I have always enjoyed doing it but the final results has never been really good, in my opinion. In my family we have also traveled a lot and when we have done this we have always gone to different types of museums. Growing up like this has made me get a sense of art and culture. I have always had an interest for museums, art galleries and more well-known art pieces such as the Mona Lisa. But I hasn’t perhaps been one of my main interests in life. Though I have always been extremely fascinated of how creative some people are and how well some can paint and create.

But it wasn’t until about a year ago my interest for art and more art history really started to grow. I would say it was an specific piece of art that really sparked my interest. The piece is made from the Swedish painter Sigrid Hjerten and it’s called ”Den Röda Rullgardinen”, which means ”The Red Blind”. The first time I saw it was at the Modern Museum of Art in Stockholm. I remember thinking ”This is my type of art!”.

My favorite paintings of all time. “The Red Blind” by Sigrid Hjerten

Why I liked the painting so much? It was very colorful, had a very warmed-toned color-scheme but she also mixed it with cool-toned colors, which I liked. The painting includes a quite stripped down woman, which I also liked because for me it symbolized feminism (don’t ask me why.. someone could say it could symbolize the opposite).

I got a book about her and even the book cover was pretty and it made me very inspired. Two things that I then realized when getting the book that made me even more fond of her. 1. She was married to the famous artist Isaac Grünewald, and the funny thing is that I’m kind of “related” to him, somehow, very far away… So I have always known how he is and known of his paintings. 2. She actually moved to France to study art. Her teacher there was Henri Matisse, which is also an artist I have always known of. Because I have always liked his paintings.

After this experience I started doing more research about art and going to more museums and art galleries around Stockholm. I learnt more about well-known painters, did a lot of research and discovered my favorite art pieces. I got books about modern art and I think I visited The Modern Museum of Art in Stockholm 5 times within the time of 6 months. When we went to Nice in France this summer I knew I had to go to Henri Matisse’s summerhouse. I got to see one of his most famous and one of my favorite pieces, which is ”Nu Blue”.

“Nu Blue” by Henri Matisse

Other than that the museum was, to be honest, an disappointment because I thought it would include more of his paintings. But I guess his most famous ones are at places like MOMA and Guggenheim in New York, and TATE Modern in London. These museums are my on top of my to do list right now!

Anyways, I have grown an huge passion for art and especially modern art. Therefore it feels like an obvious choice for me to base my final project around art. My idea is to create a ”art gallery”. I will explain my idea more in-depth in my next post.

Obstacles I have gone through

  • WordPress
I am a so called ”perfectionist”, especially when it comes to being creative. I have become the type of person who can’t really focus and study when my room is a mess. This is the same way I have felt about my WordPress-blog. I am unfortunately not the most technical person, and had a massive issue my designing my blog. I tried to look at different videos on Youtube and I tried to really make it ”pretty”, but in my opinion I never succeeded. Therefore I was not motivated to really start this project. It made me very un-inspired and un-motivated every time I logged into my WordPress account.
  • Dissatisfied with my first idea on the final project
Our first ”assessment” was to post an idea of what our final project would be about, a ”project proposal”.  I felt from the start it wasn’t that good of idea and that it was too diffuse. I remember thinking I wanted my assessment to be something I was interested and I would enjoy doing. When I’m reading my project proposal now I barely understand what my idea was about. It was a mix of me researching creativity, how creative people are, and then on top of that adding in advertising. I don’t know what I was thinking to be honest. But when I discovered what I wanted my final project to be about, which I did quite late…  It made me much more excited and motivated to start the final project.
  • Illness
I got tonsillitis at a very bad timing. Right when I had the most assessments, exams and presentations. I was sick for a week and it made my process on the final project slower. Hence the reason why I am delivering my project past the due date.

A post about creativity & inspiration

All my life I have always been an very easily inspired person. When I was little I used to be so easily inspired sometimes that it would turn into a problem (I still have the same issue sometimes). My notes on my phone was filled with miscellanies & random words of things that inspired me in that moment. It would almost turn into a obsession! I could walk in the city and get inspired of everything from a color, a persons outfit, interior, the way someone talked, etc. This has continued but I have ”control” of it now and now I see it as an advantage and something positive! I have always known I wanted to do something creative in my life! Just in which field and to which extent was the question. I have always doubted myself and thought I wasn’t creative enough to go into a creative work even though that has always been my dream. I knew I wasn’t a good enough drawer to become a designer, I knew I wasn’t good enough to saw too become a fashion designer, etc. But I always thought I had an ”eye for style”. My goal now is to become an Art Director. I would say that’s the perfect amount of ”creativeness” for me. I am a person who love to do collages, and I thought it would be fun for who ever that is reading this now to see a collage of different things that inspires me. I would say I have two “sides”, one side of me is very girly: I’m interested in beauty & fashion. The other side of me is interested in surfing and traveling. Here we have two different collages that symbolize myself in a way!

The “surf” side of me
The “girly” side of me

Then I also wanted to include a collage I made that contains a bunch of different illustrations I love! This is something I want to learn and I hope I’m able to create something like it in a couple of months/years.

Previous Work Experiences

Hello there! Long time no see! This post took me a while to do because I would personally say I don’t really have any previous work examples. I am in/at the beginning of my education and have not worked in any creative field yet, where I have had the opportunity to create. Now I have tried to gather 4 different examples of ”creative” projects I have done in the past.

Social media and taking photos on Bali
Like I mentioned in my post ”about me” I used to work at a surf-camp called Rapture on Bali for half a year. Here I had the opportunity to help out with their social media accounts, amongst other things. I used to post stuff on their feed and on their Instagram story. I also helped out with talking photos of the guest while surfing. This was a tricky task due to many factors. Most of the time it could be quite hard to catch them on the wave since the most of them where beginners. It was also hard because to the weather conditions, most of the times it was very hot and the lightning wasn’t always in my advantage. It could also be quite exhausting for the eyes since I could sit for hours sometimes. But it was fun!

Examples of how Rapture’s feed looked at the time, and the picture to the right is an example of what I used to post on their story
”Typical” photos that I could take of the guests

2 Creative Projects – first semester at Berghs School Of Communication
Before coming to Australia I did a ”foundation” semester at a school called Berghs School of Communication. If you want to work in the field of advertising and become an art director for example, this is the school to go to in Stockholm. I had 4 different units throughout my semester there.

Marketing Communication Unit
In one unit, we had an assessment where we had to develop a toilet paper and we would pretend that we would launch it on the market in Sweden. My idea was to make a ”scented toilet paper”. I thought it was a great idea, since scented toilet papers does not exist on the market yet, or at least not in Sweden. I wanted the packaging to be simple and represent a clean and fresh feeling. I ended up naming the toilet paper ”freshi”.

Here was my mood-board for the project & the final results

Visual communication Unit
Our final assessment in this unit was to create a ”music video”. We where supposed to make a video that represent our favorite visual artist, a quote we got and then add our favorite song. I choose Sigrid Hjerten, who’s old Swedish painter, I got the quote ”Nothing is worth more than laughter. It is a strength to laugh and to abandon oneself, to be light.” Then I choose the song ”Want you in my soul”. My idea was that I wanted the video to represent Sigrid Hjerten’s life. I got my inspiration from painting, ”Ateljéinterör”, it represents her being a female painter in at that time mans dominated art world. I want my movie to convey that she’s had enough. I interpreted my quote as, don’t take life too serious and have fun. I therefore chose to represent a person who’s happiness affects others. The song doesn’t have a purpose, I just found it good.

This was the final results. First time I have ever edited a movie
The painting I got my inspiration from

Creating an “advertising movie”
My final example is when I and some of my classmates got invited to go to Italy for a few days for free and create and ”advertising film” for the area we were going to go to. The area my group got was Castelmagno, which is almost by the boarder to Switzerland and France. Castelmagno is famous for their cheese which was the main feature in the movie we did. Here was the final results.

So here we have a few examples of previous work I have done in the past. I will hopefully have more after my time at ECU! Hope you enjoyed it!

About myself

Hello!

So a little about myself! My name is Rebecca Wirzberger, I’m 23 years old and from Stockholm, Sweden. I’m new to Perth and going to stay here for more than 2,5 years. Before I got here I studied at a school called Berghs School of Communication. This school is seen as one of the best school in the world when it comes to media, communication etc. I went to one of their programs called Berghs Bachelor where Berghs has partnered up with 4 different partnerschools around the world. So I had the option of choosing London, San Fransisco, Sydney and Perth. I thought Perth was most appealing! So now I’m doing a Bachelor in Media and Communication and my major is advertising. So far I’m loving it here I Perth!

What are my passions in life? Well I have many interests! I love traveling, food, art, animals, spend time with friends and family, I love surfing, fashion, beauty, music, movies etc. I have always been a person who’s easily inspired. I love to get inspiration from everything from people walking on the street, book covers, to commercial campaigns. I have always been told by my mom (cheesy I know) that I have an eye for details. And always known I want to work with something creative, just haven’t known in what field. Because I want to work with many different branches at the same time. That’s why I decided to go in to advertising. I want to create advertising campaigns for different companies, such as sports brand, car brand or make-up brands. I want to create advertising campaigns that people remember. My goal in life is to work at a famous advertising agency. As what I’m still not sure. I guess my time at ECU will help me figure that out.

After I graduated high school I have done a lot of traveling. I first went to study at Santa Barbara City College, in California. I took marketing and advertising classes there to see if it’s field I want to continue in, which I obviously found interesting. I got a marketing certificate and loved my time there! When I came home I started to work at a restaurant and after 1 year me and my friend decided to backpack throughout South and Central America. I wanted to pursue my long lost dream of surfing. So we stayed at a surf camp in Nicaragua which we feel in love with. We later on applied for a job at the company, but in Bali. We both got the job so after 2 months in South and Central America we went to Bali. In Bali we stayed for 6 months. At the surf-camp I had many different work tasks, such as helping out in the kitchen, creating content for their social media accounts & taking photos of the guests while they were surfing. I loved every minute of it. I loved the fact that I was working at a surf-camp, that I could surf almost every day, I loved the food, the weather, the atmosphere, the people, I loved everything about the place! I also met ALOT of Australians there, so I guess it was also one of the reasons I choose to study in Perth. Because I thought all of the Australian I met were so nice. Then it was unfortunately time to head home and back to the restaurant job.

After 6 months I feel like it was time for the next step in my life, to get an education. But I still wasn’t done with traveling. That’s then I discovered Berghs Bachelor program was the perfect fit for me, because it could combine it all. I could have one semester at one of the best communication schools in the world, I could live by the ocean in Australia and I could get an bachelor in something I’m very passionate about.

That’s a little bit about me.. To know more about me and my creative project stay updated 🙂
